any character from any fandom. please answer while i’m gone for lunch!
i have wonderful matchmaking skills and romantic knowledge up the wazoo but am i able to pull my head out of my ass and keep a relationship of my own? nnnnnope!
This post was originally a submission by onewayworld. But I didn’t have time to finish and accidentally posted it instead of saving it to my drafts so it is now a text post with a block quote.
I’ve never really “gotten” the concept of the quadrants as romances, but recently I found it easier to wrap my head around if I think of it all in terms of the stereotypical group dynamics of a drama:
The flushed quadrant is for the love interest, the caliginous quadrant is for enemies and rivals, the pale quadrant is where the bff4lyfe comes in and the ashen quadrant is for the mediator or the ‘mother’ of the entire group.
So I guess the quadrants are just typical character roles taken extra seriously with reproduction and societal functions tacked on and is more fluid than most typical stories that fix these roles to a particular character?
Using Twilight to illustrate my meaning even though I’m not very familliar with it: Edward started out as Bella’s Kismessitude but soon ended up as her Matesprit. Jacob was Bella’s Moirallegience but wanted them to be Flushed. Alice Cullen ends up being Bella’s Moirail instead. No idea who’d fit the role of Auspice though.
I dunno, this is still a pretty new revelation of mine, so I was wondering what you think.
Not exactly. It’s more a categorization of the various emotions that can occur in romantic relationships.
Oh no. Now you’ve done it. I am entering Quadrant Explanation mode. Can’t… Stop…
*eyes glow dramatically*
Past me from several months ago was going to have a long-winded Karkat-style explanation of each quadrants due to the misconceptions of the conciliatory quadrants, but I’ve since cooled down and developed simpler explanations that do the same job. =P
Let me be clear on one thing: flushed quadrant is sexual attraction to someone you like, pale quadrant is asexual romantic attraction where both parties balance out each others’ negative qualities while enhancing the positive, black quadrant is sexual attraction to a bitter rival, and ashen quadrant when a third party ensures a black relationship remains healthy and productive. The mediator’s job is also to end unhealthy/abusive black relationships.
As much as I’d like to avoid talking about Twilight, I’ll humor you a bit on it. =P
What happened initially between Edward and Bella is more like a black crush than an actual kismessisitude. They may have had a mutual distaste, but it never escalated to an actual rivalry.
They just wound up in a horrendously written red romance that’s basically glorified abuse.
Even though Jacob was sort of Bella’s rock during her godawful “boo-hoo-I-can’t-live-without-Edward-I-wanna-die,” I refuse to even consider him a moirail because they do NOTHING to balance each other out. Jacob was just her fall guy and Bella does nothing to actually calm him (I don’t count her mere presence making Jacob happy because she’s not doing anything). UGH!!! Sorry, I think I should stop here because of how horribly written Bella’s relationships are. >.<
In short, I think Twilight is a terrible place to look for quadrant analogies.
I’ll just explain quadrants in the usual manner.
Flushed - Not much explanation needed; you are sexually attracted to the person you like. Standard human crush/hook-up business.
Pale - Also attraction to a person. There is a very good reason flushed and pale advances can be confused for each other; they function the same romantically. The difference is that moirails do not feel sexual attraction; they are purely romantically attracted, i.e. drawn to each other emotionally. They basically do everything a flushed couple does minus the sexual aspects (which is why I hate “rails with pails” headcanons with a burning passion DX<).
In addition, in order for the relationship to be a true moirallegiance, the two parties must be balancing influences on each other. The keywords of moirallegiance is “balance and enhance.” Nepeta/Equius is a good example of this. Equius is a cranky guy who takes himself and the caste system way too seriously and constantly tries to put up a snooty bl00bl00d front. Nepeta is sweet and caring, but also a rebellious risk-taker at times. Nepeta keeps Equius from going beserk with her playful nature and constantly reminding him that he doesn’t actually buy into the caste system while Equius keeps her out of danger by serving as a sort of guardian to her.
Their love for each other is STRONG, perhaps even STRONGER than either any concupiscent relations.
I’ve written an essay in my early tumblr days on where moirallegiance fits in human relationships. Here’s the link for anyone who hasn’t read it/would like to refresh a bit: http://renegadegryphon.tumblr.com/post/45760662489/moirallegiance
Black: I’ve recently written an explanation, so I’m just going to link to it to save time and space: http://renegadegryphon.tumblr.com/post/73252321710/ive-been-wondering-if-the-black-quadrent-is-really-a
Ashen: See link for Black; it’s discussed near the end of the post.
Hope this answers your question, and sorry for taking so long to actually work on this. ^^;
the only thing i have a problem with is the ashen explanation here. auspitices prevent a kismesistude from even HAPPENING if they care about both of their well beings. they don’t keep it healthy, they keep it from happening.
- I don’t know the original source/artist/poet. Found it on net and sharing.
the poem is by merrill glass and this is the source for the art!!
